About the Council
Peterborough is one of the fastest growing places in the UK.
Our skyline has risen dramatically in the past few years, as part of a major programme of exciting regeneration, and we are putting in place the right infrastructure to meet the demands of our rising population.
We’re now home to two fantastic universities, Anglia Ruskin and the recently-opened University Centre Peterborough, which is still expanding and will have a huge positive effect on the city’s economy and general look and feel over the next few years.
Our council offices are based in an area called Fletton Quays, which is another recent development, boasting flats, offices, food and drink outlets, with plans to expand it further still. Our centre is now a vibrant, welcoming place with great venues to eat and drink.
We also have excellent transport links. You can get to central London in 45 minutes and we’re close to major road networks. Our city’s train station and the area around it, known as the Station Quarter, is also about to be extensively regenerated, further enhancing our infrastructure.
Peterborough is not just a place to work; it’s a great place to live and thrive. Our city offers excellent schools, beautiful award-winning parks and open spaces and a wide range of cultural and recreational activities. We have a multicultural and proud population, with strong and welcoming communities.
The city council was formed as a unitary authority in 1998, having previously been part of Cambridgeshire County Council. As a unitary authority, the council has both the powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council combined.
